Alexa, Echo and Echo Dot

So...what is Alexa? And what is Echo Dot?

Echo and Echo Dot are electronic personal assistants that work with voice commands using software called Alexa. They're like robots - artificial intelligence little wonders - without any clunky legs!

You can ask them to do things for you, like play music, sing, control your home lights, control your heating system or air conditioner, garage doors, sprinklers and locks. They can also control your TV, make phone calls, do math calculations, scan maps, estimate distances, check the weather and traffic, and scan the internet to find answers to almost any question you have. They can also keep lists of things to do, shopping lists and and send it all to your phone. And it can order things online for you when you tell it to. They can even tell jokes and engage in conversations!

Echo and Echo Dot use Bluetooth and Wifi technology to do their tasks.  Therefore whatever you want to control must be capable of using the same technology. Also, depending on the size of the area you want to control, you may need to buy more than one...the good news is...they the Echo Dot comes in multi-packs.

They both do so many things I can't list them all here, but you get an idea!

Both Echo and Echo Dot learn as time goes by, so they will perfect their abilities in time. You can speed up the 'learning" process by hooking it up to your accounts in Spotify, sports websites, youtube, news sources, etc

The main differences between the two is the size and the speaker. Echo Dot is very small (1.3" x 3.3" x 3.3"  or 32 mm x 84 mm x 84 mm and light (5.7 oz or 163 grams). So , it's a lot smaller than Echo , and therefore has a smaller speaker, but you can still hear it clearly. Because of the larger speaker, Echo is better for high-quality music playing. However, unlike Echo, you can hook up the Echo Dot to your speakers (Bluetooth or not!).

You can use both Echo and Echo Dot at the same time. Have an Echo for areas of the house where music is important, and the smaller Echo Dots elsewhere, where automation is the main interest (if you need more than 1 at all).

You don't have to use all of their abilities, but only those you want it to perform. You will have to learn the proper commands, but the commands are very easy and it will help you relax and gets things done at the same time. Or ...my favorite thing..multitask! You can cook while listening to your favorite music and hear the recipe being read - all done by Echo (except the cooking!).

I hope this helps you understand what these little marvels are... a wonderful, effective way to make life easier and more productive.

Until the next post...be well. :)
