Ships Ahoy! Decorating with Tall Ships

Nautical themes are among the most popular styles these days. Timeless and elegant, nautical decor can also be paradoxically informal and relaxing. The predominant colors will be blue, white and gold, the colors associated with the sea or beach, sand, clouds and sunlight.

Combining elements of the marine environment with stripes and knot designs makes for a cozy feeling unlike any other, and allows you to recreate a calm holiday vacation feeling even if you live in the middle of a huge city like New York. It's actually creating your little getaway even in the middle of a concrete jungle.

Printed simulations or actual materials including wood, rope and canvas along with the color mentioned above (gold, blue and white) combine in different ways to give it a more formal or informal feeling. Polished dark wood and warmer shade of dark blue (or even red) and gold lend themselves for a more formal feel, as do more antique drawings and elements. Lighter shades of wood - particularly driftwood - and lighter shades or blue and green help create a more beach-like, informal feel, reminiscent of island or coastal living. The pastel versions of green and blue also serve the baby room decor purpose.

One must try not to overload the place with too many overtly nautical themes, thus solid-color and stripes help balance out actual drawings of ships, maritime landscape paintings or marine animals. So, for example, if you want to have 3 pillows and a blanket on a sofa...make most of it solid, and introduce the nautical theme with an accent pillow with a tall ship or a starfish. Then place a related framed drawing or painting on the wall behind the sofa.

Since we're talking about tall ships, here are some items that might help to create your maritime feel. There are many more items that are nautical, but for practical purposes, I've limited this listing to tall ships only. These are the "accents"...combine with solid color or striped items for a more balanced result...these are the items that you will mix with solid color or striped items for a balanced, high-end, sophisticated nautical look. Too many of these will look too busy, but as a piece among other solid ones will be much better!
